Joanie is an 87-year-old widow with a three-year history of major depression, resulting in two hospitalizations. Her depression was severe enough to require
a course of ECT, which resulted in modest improvement, but her family was concerned about the cognitive side effects she was experiencing. After switching
to TMS therapy, Joanie’s mood has fully returned to baseline, and her cognitive function is better than baseline. Joanie also has a cardiac
pacemaker, which is not affected by the use of TMS.
