Course Summary

This course, which was developed by leading clinicians and researchers, provides practical, up-to-date information to Psychiatrists, Physicians and allied health professionals who are interested in the clinical use of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation).

Course content will address the science underlying the mechanism of action of TMS, the data demonstrating the efficacy of TMS in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, and the evidence for the safety of TMS. Additional topics will address practical issues of patient selection, initial treatment planning, patient management during and after an acute course of TMS therapy, and the use of standardized measures to assess patient outcome. The development of TMS technology and TMS coil design will be reviewed. Practical administration of TMS in a clinical setting and insurance reimbursement for TMS will be discussed. Data regarding the efficacy of TMS in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders other than depression will be reviewed along with new developments in TMS and other emerging brain stimulation and neuromodulation technologies.

Finally, participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with TMS devices currently cleared for clinical use by the FDA.

The presentational method for this activity will be Case Presentation with Learner Participation, Panel Discussion, Lecture with Q&A, Small Group Discussion/Roundtable, Hands-On Demonstration (with TMS Devices), and Simulated or live Patient. This live course is geared towards Physicians and Allied Health Personnel interested in the administration of TMS for depression. This activity will encompass the following desirable physician attributes: Patient Care & Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Professionalism, Practice-Based Learning & Improvement, and Systems-Based Practice.
